Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd, the Indian unit of Japan's Toyota Motor Corp, is investing about Rs 3,200 crore to set up its second manufacturing facility in Bangalore by early 2011.

"With the introduction of the Etios we will enter the mass volume segment. We are looking at a sales volume of 70,000 (cars) in the first year," said Hiroshi Nakagawa, managing director of Toyota Kirloskar.

Speaking to reporters, Toyota Motor Corp Vice Chairman Kazuo Okamoto said, "We are very excited to finally showcase the concept of Etios, which has been newly developed specifically for customers in India."

"After the slowdown, we are now in a difficult situation and we are trying to achieve constant recovery. The Indian market is very important and big for Toyota and it is expected to grow up to four million units by 2015," Okamoto added.

The much awaited small car, or rather cars, considering both the sedan and the hatchback variants, was among the first unveilings of the 2010 Auto Expo here at the Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.

The Etios represents the new approach being adopted by big international auto manufacturers where rather than just bring in global models and hope they work in this country, cars specifically with India, and the needs of Indian customers in mind are being developed. Toyota's philosophy for the Etios is 'World first, India first' as the car(s) being developed will first be launched in India before it makes its world debut.

Powering the sedan version of the Etios is a 1.5-litre petrol engine while the hatchback will receive a 1.2-litre petrol motor. Both engines are all-new and have been specifically designed for Indian conditions, so high mileage was a key factor in the design. Present at the unveiling of these two concepts were top officials from the Toyota Motor Corporation including vice-chairman Kazuo Okamoto and Senior Managing Director, Akira Okabe. Speaking on the occasion, Kazuo Okamoto commented "Our highest priority will be to make every effort to exceed the Indian customers' expectations and the introduction of the Etios concept today is the first step in this direction." Hiroshi Nakagawa, Managing Director of Toyota Kirloskar Motor said "With the introduction of the Etios, Toyota will enter the mass volume segment and we are looking at a sales volume of 70,000 units in the first year."

Toyota Etios is the special small car built for India and few other selected markets. ToyotaEtios will be manufactured in both hatchback and sedan variants. In both segment they will have 1.2 lite and 1.5 litres petrol engines. Toyotademonstrated a blue color Etios model at Delhi auto Expo 2010. The launch date of Etiosis not yet confirmed. But it would be around the end 2010.

MITSUBUSHI OUTLANDER -2010 LAUNCHED IN INDIA

The Outlander is Mitsubishi's smallest SUV offering in North America. The compact crossover is built on the same platform as the Dodge Caliber and Chrysler Sebring -- the result of a partnership with Chrysler.

The entry-level Outlander ES and SE models are powered by a fuel-efficient 2.4-liter 168 horsepower, 167 lb-ft of torque aluminum DOHC MIVEC four-cylinder engine teamed with a new Sportronic CVT transmission.

Both the ES and SE will return 21 city, and 27 highway in front-wheel-drive form, and 21 city, 25 highway with all-wheel-control. The XLS obtains 19 city, and 25 highway in front-wheel-drive form, but drops to 18 city, 24 highway with all-wheel-control. The GT is only available with all-wheel-control and is thus rated at 18 city, 24 highway.

The more premium XLS and GT models are powered by an updated 3.0-liter 230 horsepower, 204 lb-ft of torque aluminum MIVEC V6 engine mated to a six-speed Sportronic automatic transmission.

All Outlander models come standard with front-wheel drive, Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC), Anti-lock Braking system (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) to improve steering while braking. What's more, all are available with optional all-wheel-control.

The entry-level ES model comes with standard 16-inch wheels, front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, anti-lock breaks, a tire pressure monitor, ASC, aluminum roof and a flap-fold tailgate. There are no options on the ES model.

The SE, XLS, and GT models all come with 18 inch wheels, with the latter two having a unique 7-spoke design. The SE gains FAST-key over the ES as standard equipment, as well as availability of the 710-watt Rockford Fosgate stereo, FUSE hands-free link system, and a power glass sunroof.

The upscale XLS and GT models come with more standard and available equipment. The XLS gains standard FAST-key and FUSE technologies, with the option for full leather seating surfaces, Xenon HID headlamps and the 40GB HDD Navigation with a music server and real-time traffic.

The top-level GT comes standard with Xenon HID headlamps, 710-watt Rockford Fosgate stereo, and the power glass sunroof.

In all four trim levels the second row seat features independently reclining 60/40 split fold-and-tumble seat backs. On XLS models, the standard third row seat folds flat into the floor. With the second and third rows folded, overall cargo volume is 72.6 cubic feet.

The 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander provides a surprisingly fun and sporty driving experience. However, several test drivers complain about the sluggish base engine. The 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander ranks 6 out of 24 Affordable Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 59 published reviews and test drives of the Mitsubishi Outlander, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Outlander is a better-than-average performer in the vast compact SUV segment. It stands out for an enjoyable driving experience and lengthy warranties. However, poor interior quality and an underpowered base engine keep it from really competing with top rivals.

The Outlander starts at just over $20,500, making it an average-priced compact SUV. Its 20/25 mpg fuel economy rating is also about average for the class. So why should anyone take a look at this seemingly average vehicle? Put simply, although the base trim is, well, average, other available trims make up for it. The new CB Twister is based on the same platform as the other biggies ala CB 1000R (aka Hornet), CB300R etc., though in a typical Indian commuter format. As reported earlier, the bike is powered by a 109cc motor (we are yet to ascertain if it is the same Activa/Aviator’s 109cc mill or a different one) which pumps out a maximum power output of a pretty decent 9 bhp @ 8k rpm and the peak torque output of 9Nm comes in at 6k rpm. Added to the impressive stats is the lesser weight of the bike (108 kgs) which definitely would make this bike a treat to flip through our Indian roads with ease. Arent we missing something? Yes, for the plain jane mileage concious people Honda promises this bike to deliver fuel efficiency figures of 70 kmpl under real road conditions which are impressive by any standards. The bike comes with a 4 speed transmission box where we expected it to be a 5 speed one!

The front suspension does its job with telescopic hydraulics whereas the rear duty is performed by rectangular box swing arm type spring loaded hydraulics. Braking duties are performed by 240mm discs at the front and normal 110mm drums at the rear. With a light weight, we feel this bike would be a lovely mix of fun and control. Slowly Honda is also moving to 17 inch tyres. Specs for the front rubber are 70/100 17 and the rear does with fat 80/100 17 rubbers but the good news is that both the tyres are tubeless. Moving on to the instrumentation bit, the bike still does with the traditional analogue speedo meter and fuel gauge but the way they have been designed impressed us a lot. However, there is no tachometer still, along with the absence of gas charged shock absorbers, DC electricals and LED lamps which have become quite a norm on Indian bikes of late.

The bike also comes loaded with a sporty half chain cover in keeping with the latest trends but we feel that’s a little too much specially keepin in mind the cadre of people (commuter oriented) this bike would be bought by as maintaining an open chain is one of the biggest issues faced by the bigger bike owners these days. Viscous air filter (which has been made standard on most of the HMSI scooters) also ensures the engine gets dust free air and you get lesser pains to change the maintenance free air filter. Along with other features, we are mighty impressed by the huge 180mm ground clearance of the bike. Fuel tank capacity of the bike is a little low at 8 liters. A maintenance free 12 V 3 Ah battery is also provided with the bike.

The bike would be offered in five different colors viz Pearl NightStar Black, Pearl Siena Red, Pearl Fuji Blue, Pearl Amber Yellow and Candy Sonic Green. Alongwith, the bike would be available in three different variants.

Now we have two news left to share; one good and one bad. We will start with the good news first. The base variant would be yours for an on road (Delhi) price of close to 45-46ks (ex showroom Delhi is 42k) only which makes it a lovey package and a threat to some others lurking around the same price band. Bad news is that the bike would be available only after February 2010. Seems like the market is heating up with some sizzling beauties from all corners of the country. Ancient Indian Currency Notes With History:

I was surprised when this landed in my e-mail. An excellent collection of 20 odd pictures of old Indian currency. The star is the 10,000 rupee note!

This email claims that the first set of British India notes were the ‘Victoria Portrait’ Series issued in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 1000. These were unifaced, carried two language panels and were printed on hand-moulded paper manufactured at the Laverstock Paper Mills (Portals). The security features incorporated the watermark (GOVERNMENT OF INDIA, RUPEES, two signatures and wavy lines), the printed signature and the registration of the notes.

British India Notes facilitated inter-spatial transfer of funds. As a security precaution, notes were cut in half. One set was sent by post. On confirmation of receipt, the other half was despatched by post.

The introduction of small denomination notes in India was essentially in the realm of the exigent. Compulsions of the first World War led to the introduction of paper currency of small denominations. Rupee One was introduced on 30th November, 1917 followed by the exotic Rupees Two and Annas Eight. The issuance of these notes was discontinued on 1st January, 1926 on cost benefit considerations. These notes first carried the portrait of King George V and were the precursors of the ‘King’s Portrait’ Series which were to follow.

King’s Portrait Series

Regular issues of this Series carrying the portrait of George V were introduced in May, 1923 on a Ten Rupee Note. The King’s Portrait Motif continued as an integral feature of all Paper Money issues of British India. Government of India continued to issue currency notes till 1935 when the Reserve Bank of India took over the functions of the Controller of Currency. These notes were issued in denominations of Rs 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 10,000.

Republic India Coinage

India won its independence on 15^th August, 1947. During the period of transition India retained the monetary system and the currency and coinage of the earlier period. While Pakistan introduced a new series of coins in 1948 and notes in 1949, India brought out its distinctive coins on 15^th August, 1950.

Chronologically, the main considerations influencing the coinage policy of Republic India over time have been:

The incorporation of symbols of sovereignty and indigenous motifs on independence;
Coinage Reforms with the introduction of the metric system;
The need felt from time to time to obviate the possibility of the metallic value of coins rising beyond the face value;
The cost-benefit of coinisation of currency notes

Independent India Issues could broadly be categorised as The Rupees from 1947-1950. This represented the currency arrangements during the transition period upto the establishment of the Indian Republic. The Monetary System remained unchanged at One Rupee consisting of 192 pies.

The Anna Series
This series was introduced on 15^th August, 1950 and represented the first coinage of Republic India. The King's Portrait was replaced by the Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar. The monetary system was largely retained unchanged with one Rupee consisting of 16 Annas.

The Decimal Series
The move towards decimalisation was afoot for over a century. However, it was in September, 1955 that the Indian Coinage Act was amended for the country to adopt a metric system for coinage. The Act came into force with effect from 1^st April, 1957. The rupee remained unchanged in value and nomenclature. It, however, was now divided into 100 'Paisa' instead of 16 Annas or 64 Pice. For public recognition, the new decimal Paisa was termed 'Naya Paisa' till 1^st June, 1964 when the term 'Naya' was dropped.

With commodity prices rising in the sixties, small denomination coins which were made of bronze, nickel- brass, cupro-nickel, and Aluminium-Bronze were gradually minted in Aluminium. This change commenced with the introduction of the new hexagonal 3 paise coin. A twenty paise coin was introduced in 1968 but did not gain much popularity.

Over a period of time, cost benefit considerations led to the gradual discontinuance of 1, 2 and 3 paise coins in the seventies; Stainless steel coinage of 10, 25 and 50 paise, was introduced in 1988 and of one rupee in 1992. The very considerable costs of managing note issues of Re 1, Rs 2, and Rs 5 led to the gradual coinisation of these denominations in the 1990s.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has announced its entry into new segment of mini trucks by launching its Gio (Mahindra Gio) commercial vehichle today, 28th October 2009.

Calling it “India’s first compact truck”, Mahindra Gio is priced at Rs 1.65 lakh.

Mahindra Gio uses a two-cylinder, 441cc, diesel engine that produces 9.1 bhp and 2.2 kgm of peak torque. The engine is developed by Kohler and is made at Kohler’s facilities in India, whereas 4-speed manual transmission is developed by Mahindra itself.

The Gio has a payload of 0.5 tonne, with a GVW of a little over 1.1 tonne. Unlike other mini-trucks, mahindra Gio uses front independent suspension rather than leaf springs.

The Gio will be sold in two phases. The first phase will involve the North, East and Western parts of India and the vehicle will be available right away.(www.helpride.blogspot.com) The second phase will see the vehicle being launched in the south, which should happen by January 2010.

Engine Performance

Mahindra Gio uses a direct injection double cylinder 441cc diesel engine producing 9.1 bhp power and a good 2.2 kgm peak torque. The engine is made by USA based Kohler but is manufactured at Kohler’s facilities at India. With this engine, the vehicle is rated to deliver 27 kmpl mileage on test conditions and we believe that the vehicle will easily deliver above 20 kmpl mileage in any situation. The diesel engine delivering this much high mileage is sure to be envied by other competitors in this segment.

Comfort, Styling and Safety:

The price of Mahindra Gio may be on the lower side but it does not look like a cheapo by any means. The internal ergonomic designgives the vehicle a car like feel and the adjustable cushioned bucket seats and other features add to comfort and convenience. The cabin is tall and wide with extra leg room which is ideal for easy entry and exit. The easy to read instrument panel add to driving pleasure. The signature Mahindra front grill looks stylish and trendy while the semi forward cabin with crumple zone add some safety to the driving cabin. Multi focal reflector halogen lights, side indicators and bigger rear view mirrors offer optimum visibility. The vehicle is also available in five different shades of Peacock Blue, Royal Red, Sporty Green, Golden Yellow.

Payload:

The Gio has a low to moderate payload of 0.5 tonne which will be enough for some delivery of goods to shops and stores. The 5 feet cargo box load body is made of fully corrugated sheet which is strong and long lasting. The gross vehicle weight is a little over 1.1 tonne. The payload of the vehicle indicates that it will be competing in the 0.5 tonne LCV segment which is currently occupied by the three wheelers.

Transmission:

The vehicle comes equipped with a 4 speed manual transmission and is developed by Mahindra itself. With 4 forward and 1 reverse gear box the engine smoothly delivers power to the wheels.

Suspension:

The front suspensions are independent suspensions and unlike spring leaf suspension, they give more comfort and control. The rear suspensions are common spring leaf suspension with rigid axle to enhance load stability.

General Motors will launch the must awaited Beat small car in India on 4th January 2010 Delhi Auto expo.

Chevrolet Beat will carry a 1.2-Litre, 4-Pot engine that generates 80.5PS of peak power at 6200rpm and 108Nm of peak torque at 4400rpm.

Chevrolet Beat will spin its wheels with the help of McPherson strut type suspension at the front and compound crank type at the rear.

Chevrolet Beat will sport disc brakes at the front and drum at the rear. It will burn its wheels with 155/70 R14 tubeless tyres.

Chevrolet Beat is measured at 3640mm in length, 1595mm in width and 1520mm in height. Beat’s wheelbase is 2375mm and ground clearance of 165mm. It weighs at just 965kg.

Chevrolet Beat will come in three variants including 1.2, 1.2LS and 1.2LT.

Chevrolet Beat has won an award for the safety vertical as per the Euro NCAP safety rating it has gained 4 stars.

GM is launching Chevrolet's Beat in the small car segment in India. Prior to this car, GM came with Aveo U-VA and Spark and this car will be between Spark and U-VA. It was during last year's Auto Expo that Chevrolet Beat came to India and it stole the hearts of people. It is four door hatchback cars in India. This car is based on a concept which was displayed in New York Auto expo two years back. Though this car is called Spark in other countries but in India it will be called as Beat because GM has already launched another mini car with the name of Spark in India. This car will be available in Diesel as well as petrol engines models.
GM got the confidence for launch of Beat in India because of the success and popularity of Spark. Beat is being designed for city commuting and has small displacement engine to deliver best fuel economy. The car is designed on the same platform on which Splash from Suzuki was built. Beat, unlike Spark and Aveao U-VA, will be priced very competitively because GM is setting an engine plant in India only.

This car will be in heads on competition with other small cars in hatchback segment like Hyundai i10 Kappa and Maruti Suzuki' new Splash. Beat is 3640mm in length which is about 75 mm longer than i10. Though this car is small but it is not at all cute and petite as it looks strong and muscular.

Inside of the car is quite elegant. It is more like current Spark doing rounds in India. It has got encapsulated speakers on the dashboard, central console or Ac louvre; all of them are like in Spark. Instrument binnacle is placed, just like other cars, behind the steering wheel. It has got a LCD interface. There is mix of vibrant colors inside the car which make it lively place to be in. There is enough room for four adults and their luggage.

There would be two variants of this car; 1.0 --liter four cylinder petrol and new 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol. Though exact power figures are not available yet but it is expected that 1.0 litre engine will deliver 65 bhp and 1.2-litre engine will deliver 80-85 bhp. This car is designed for city commute but can run comfortably on highways also.

9. Sent a SMS again to 3733 with the text ‘ACTGPRS’, to which I got a reply back saying, ‘GPRS and MMS services are already enabled’.

Has anyone successfully set this thing up ?

I have called the customer care, spoken to them ‘n’ number of times, but its of no use. Typical government stuff.

Any pointers to success would be really helpful.

Update 1 (Around Sept 19th, 2005) : BSNL customer care folks told me that the GPRS service is down for a few days and should be back online withing couple of days.

Update 2 (Sep 26th, 2005) : Called up local customer care center at Mangalore. The person says that Nokia 6600 handset has some problem with BSNL GPRS network! - Can anyone confirm this ? Cant directly trust these folks. Everytime you call them, they give you some new reason. If I get a chance, i will check it with an different handset. BTW, the solution suggested by the BSNL local guy is to upgrade software (firmware to the latest version - costs around Rs. 500).

Update 3 (Oct First week) : Spoke to one more person at the local exchange. Could reach that person after getting redirected atleast 5 times. Almost always, the person at the enter end, conviniently gives one more number saying that the next person is ‘the’ person who can handle this!. Finally, I end up talking to a technical guy (I think!). Now, this person doesn’t say anything about Nokia 6600 problem. He says even he wasn’t able to access GPRS for a couple of days. Asks me to call in a couple of days. I call back after couple of days. He says some settings have been changed just a few days back, and he doesn’t have the settings. Asks me to call back after 20 mins. I call back. Says, settings are too lengthy. Says, he cant tell the settings over the phone (WTF???). Points me the BSNL webpage mentioned above to download the settings. I downloaded the settings again. No change. Still no GPRS. Anyone from BSNL with a decent knowledge of whats happening … reading this ?

Update 4 (Oct 25, 2005) : Finally got my GPRS activiated today. The endless calls to the customer care turned out to be a total waste. Yesterday, I called up the local customer service center in mangalore. They refered me a the number of JTO of mangalore. JTO inturn gave me one more number. It was kind of endless chain. Finally I landed up with some technical person. The person confirmed that all my settings were fine. Then he checked the system (HLR) and told me that my GPRS wasn’t activated at all!. WTF!!!!!!!. He told me that at Mangalore, he wont be able to activate it, and he gave me the contact number of a person in bangalore. The person at bangalore told me that I need to call him up again today. It seems this is happening all the time and that he is fed up. Some how, the reporting system says that the GPRS is activated, but in reality (switch) it isn’t.!

So, I gave the same person a call today. And finally, he enabled my GPRS access. Now, I am able to browse on my phone. But its quite expensive. Only in emergency!

Update 5: For the benefit of all everyone, here are the correct GPRS Settings for BSNL south users for Nokia 6600. These settings work for me.

Navigate to : Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connection

Select GPRS (Second item on the screen)
GRPS Connection -> When needed (if you select when available, GPRS will be always active, and you would be charged. So, use with caution)
Access Point -> gprs.cellone.in

Click on ->Back

Select Access Points (first item on the screen)
Option -> New Access Point -> Use default settings
Connection name -> bsnl-gprs (can be anything)
Data Bearer -> GPRS
Access point name -> bsnlwap (not bsnlsouth)
User name : ppp
Password : ppp123
Authentication : Normal
Homepage : http://localhost/home.wml

Then….
Options ->Advance settings
Phone IP address -> Automatic
Primary name server : 0.0.0.0
Secondary name server : 0.0.0.0
Proxy server address : 10.31.54.2
Proxy Port Number : 9401

Done.

If you want to browse the net using Opera, then you must set the proxy server address and proxy port number mentioned above in opera settings too. The same holds true for other browser too.

If the above settings don’t work, then clearly, your GPRS is NOT activated by BSNL. Call up the local BSNL exchange, and ask them to check if GPRS is activated in the HLR.

Maruti Kizashi is still in the concept stage in India. Maruti Suzuki Kizashi was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007 and later at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi in 2008. Maruti Kizashi will be priced at Rs. 10 lakh and therefore will be a premium car with luxury features.

Maruti Kizashi comes with an outstanding aero-dynamic design with front view featuring a completely stylish look. There is a new innovative tapering headlights and classic front design that is unseen so far in Maruti small car models in India. This new upcoming model can rightfully be attributed as a cross-over sports sedan.

Maruti has very recently launched yet another small car model, Maruti Ritz, in India but it is yet to make its impact in the Indian market. Maruti Suzuki India Limited; India's largest car manufacturer that sells nearly every second car in India is contemplating an expansion of its product portfolio; especially in the sedan segment. As of now, Maruti Swift and Swift DZire attribute to a majority of its sales.

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi said "My concern is about the quality of our growth. Although we achieved good overall national numbers, the region-wise and model-wise performance was not uniform. We relied mostly on Dzire and Swift to power our growth."

MSIL (Maruti Suzuki India Limited) seems to be getting ready to launch a new car, a crossover of sporty looking sedan in India. Christened as Maruti Kizashi, the sedan is still in initial stages and will take about a year’s time for the launch, say around 2010.

Maruti Suzuki Kizashi; however, was unveiled during 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and then in 2008 at the Auto Expo Delhi.

Although there are no cues to the exact pricing of the Maruti Kizashi, feelers say that it will be priced around 10 lakhs and so obviously one can expect the sedan to be a premium car with no compromise on luxury features.

Still the USP of the Maruti Kizashi will be its incredible aerodynamic designing and a stylish front with huge grill. The headlights (LEDs) will taper down in an angular fashion giving it a fresh yet stylish look to the Kizashi. We have not seen such a fairing for any of the existent Maruti cars, however, it certainly doesn’t look like a car for Indian roads as the bumpers almost kiss the ground.

Maruti Ritz which was launched recently still needs to click in the Indian market and with cars like Kizashi Maruti portfolio certainly will be bolstered. Maruti Suzuki India Limited is India’s largest car maker as well as seller in the country, but in the sedan segment it has to make its mark felt and as of now it has Swift and Swift Dzire cars in the segment. However, there is a lot of competition for sedans and Maruti will have to work through new sales strategies to create an impact.
